Arsenal v Liverpool Live Commentary & Result, 29/08/2020, Community Shield

That’s all from this Arsenal win. Thanks for joining us and, until next time, goodbye!

Attention can now turn towards the Premier League season. Champions Liverpool start against Leeds United, with Arsenal also facing a promoted club in Fulham.

Aubameyang fittingly nets the final penalty! He had Arsenal deservedly in front in the first half, before Minamino equalised to reach a shoot-out. But Brewster hit the crossbar as Arsenal kept their nerves. They enjoy playing at Wembley!

FULL-TIME: Arsenal 1-1 Liverpool (5-4 on pens)

GOAL! ARSENAL WIN IT! It’s Aubameyang, of course! Alisson guesses wrong once more and Aubameyang finds the top-right corner. 5-4!

GOAL! Jones keeps Liverpool in it! The midfielder places a low finish into the bottom-left corner. 4-4.

GOAL! David Luiz comes up with a beauty. Top-left corner. Arsenal are one goal away now. 4-3 Arsenal.

GOAL! Minamino keeps the pressure on Arsenal, smashing the ball straight down the middle. 3-3.

GOAL! Cedric makes no mistake. Alisson goes the wrong way once more. 3-2 Arsenal.

MISS! Oh dear! Brewster, the man brought on to take a penalty, hammers his spot-kick against the crossbar. Advantage Arsenal. 2-2.

GOAL! Cheeky from Maitland-Niles! He dinks in a cool finish to level it up again. 2-2.

GOAL! The takers remain on top! Martinez goes the wrong way and Fabinho hits the net. 2-1 Liverpool.

GOAL! Superb penalty from Nelson! Alisson dives left, but Nelson fires the ball into the opposite corner. 1-1.

GOAL! Salah smashes in the opening penalty as Martinez dives the wrong way. 1-0 Liverpool.

Minamino’s equaliser takes us to a shoot-out. Liverpool lost to Manchester City on spot-kicks last season…

90′ + 3′ FULL-TIME: Arsenal 1-1 Liverpool

90′ + 2′ A change with one eye on penalties? Brewster comes on for Wijnaldum.

90′ + 1′ OVER! Back come Liverpool for a final flurry! Mane sends a deep cross to the back post, where Robertson gets away from Cedric again but loops his header over the top.

90′ + 1′ There will be a minimum of three added minutes. We are heading for a penalty shoot-out as things stand.

89′ Now Willock gets a dangerous cross into the centre, with Aubameyang moving to the near post and attempting a flick with Van Dijk in close attendance. The ball bounces wide, with Aubameyang deemed to have had the last touch.

87′ Arsenal are on top in the closing stages. Maitland-Niles crosses again, but Aubameyang cannot stretch to get a touch and Alisson gratefully gathers.

86′ CHANCE! Big chance for Willock! After great work from Maitland-Niles on the left sees his cross come to nothing, Cedric delivers from the right. Willock has space to aim an uncontested header goalwards but screws his effort off target.

Liverpool

83′ Liverpool make a change, too, with Klopp perhaps aware of the extremely attacking nature of his line-up. Firmino goes off for Jones.

Arsenal

83′ Tierney has gone down a couple of times and gets some respite with the introduction of Kolasinac.

Arsenal

82′ Nketiah has struggled to have an impact up front and bows out for Nelson. Aubameyang may now move through the centre.

Arsenal

82′ Unsurprisingly after a tired second-half display, Arsenal make a raft of changes. Saka is off for Willock.

81′ SAVE! Vital stop from Martinez! Mane looks certain to score! Cedric is struggling badly up against Robertson, completely out of position as the ball comes his way the first time and then unable to stop a second cross. Mane controls on his chest, with Arsenal scrambling, but Martinez gets out to block brilliantly once again.

79′ Saka almost gets in! Holding angles a long ball in behind the Liverpool defence, and the winger is just onside. He tumbles as Robertson comes across, though, and does not appeal for a foul, having just lost his footing.

78′ Arsenal keep the ball for a spell to take a break from the defensive pressure.

76′ It is all Liverpool now and Minamino and Salah are involved again. Neat work on the edge of the box comes to nothing as Holding steps in to smash clear.

75′ Liverpool quickly set off in pursuit of a winner. Robertson crosses again, but Martinez holds on.

74′ Minamino is the first player to score his first ever goal for Liverpool at Wembley.

74′ Arsenal appeal for a handball from Salah in the build-up, but the VAR can spot no foul, with Cedric unwittingly helping the ball into Minamino’s path.

Liverpool

73′ GOOAAALLLL!!! MINAMINO! The substitute slams in the equaliser! Salah is involved for the first time and darts from right to left into the area, causing chaos as the ball bounces around the box. It eventually breaks to Minamino, who finishes past Martinez for his first Liverpool goal.

71′ Tierney can only head Robertson’s free-kick behind for a corner, allowing Liverpool to build again. Firmino gets down the left and cuts a cross back towards Mane, but Holding intervenes well.

70′ It is Cedric’s turn for some untidy play. He runs into Minamino under a long ball and gives away a free-kick just outside the box.

69′ Slightly clumsy work from Alisson. He punches poorly from a right-wing corner, but there is a foul in the centre and he gets a free-kick.

69′ Saka has been a little more quiet in the second half but now gets the chance to run at Wijnaldum after an Aubameyang pass. His shot is deflected and Alisson cannot keep the ball in play.

68′ SAVE! Martinez holds on! Keita breaks through the midfield and slips in Firmino, who draws a marker and then squares to Minamino. The shot is powerful but straight at Martinez, whose handling is secure.

65′ Excellent defending from Maitland-Niles. Mane hares after the ball on the right but is matched stride-for-stride by the wing-back, who gets back and clears.

64′ Liverpool are struggling to break Arsenal down. A long ball towards Robertson runs behind before he can aim a cross towards the box. That Mane chance represents by far their best opening.

61′ Fabinho looks to have moved to centre-back, with Gomez taking Williams’ place on the right. It is a forward-thinking midfield three with Wijnaldum, Minamino and Keita.

60′ Keita is straight into the action with a blast goalwards from distance, but he does not come close to hitting the target.

Liverpool

59′ Keita is the other man introduced, with Milner’s final involvement his yellow card.

Liverpool

59′ Liverpool are going to make changes, too, and go for two attacking switches. First, Minamino replaces Williams.

Arsenal

58′ It is like-for-like in the first substitution as Arsenal bring on Cedric for Bellerin.

58′ Salah’s performance so far is summed up as he miscontrols a long ball and then overhits a pass back to Williams. The ball runs out of play.

Liverpool

57′ Rash from Milner! He lunges in on Nketiah and gets nowhere near the ball, picking up the game’s first booking.

56′ SAVE! Now Martinez is worked! And he excels! Mane races in behind Holding, just about staying onside, and goes through on goal, but Martinez advances and blocks bravely to keep Arsenal in front.

55′ Aubameyang superbly challenges Van Dijk in the Arsenal half and runs at the Liverpool defence. Fabinho is getting back to support Gomez, so Aubameyang looks towards Saka, who is closed out by Robertson.

54′ Liverpool still wait for a first shot on target. They are queueing up on the edge of the box but can only win a corner, from which Milner finds Van Dijk. A feeble header drops well, well wide.

52′ Uncharacteristically wasteful from Aubameyang. He is given the opportunity to run at Williams on the left but lifts in a poor, wayward cross.

51′ WIDE! Close from Firmino! Looking to replicate Aubameyang’s opener, he opens up on his right foot and shapes a shot towards the bottom-right corner but just misses the post.

51′ High and wide from Maitland-Niles! It’s another smart Arsenal move, with Saka involved once more as he drifts inside, but Maitland-Niles goes for a speculative strike and misses the target.

50′ Great work from Elneny as he beats Salah to the ball in the centre of the pitch and then dances away from Milner, earning a foul. He is back on his feet soon enough, however.

49′ Liverpool are soon back on the front foot, again through Robertson. His latest cross is headed clear in front of Salah, who has been very quiet indeed.

47′ Arsenal played on the counter for much of the first half but are keeping the ball well at the start of the second.

46′ KICK-OFF: We are back up and running through Nketiah!

Liverpool are yet to record a shot on target in the game (seven total attempts), while Arsenal scored with their first effort of the match.

It is Arsenal who lead at the halfway stage of the first match of the new season. Aubameyang’s sublime 12th-minute goal broke the deadlock, while the Gunners might have added to their lead. Liverpool have dominated the possession but, besides an offside Van Dijk finish, have little to show for it.

45′ + 2′ HALF-TIME: Arsenal 1-0 Liverpool

45′ + 1′ There will be a minimum of one minute of added time.

45′ More wonderful work from Saka! He and Robertson, facing one another, have been the two standout performers so far. Saka appears on the left this time, though, and whips in a gorgeous cross. There is no Arsenal team-mate waiting to capitalise in the centre.

43′ Van Dijk clears a right-wing Arsenal corner, but Liverpool are then fortunate to see Aubameyang flagged offside as the ball is hooked back in behind. The forward looks to be on.

42′ Deflected wide! Back come Arsenal with a really smart attack. After a cross from the left comes to nothing, they get bodies forward and Bellerin dances inside. The ball ends up back on the left with Aubameyang and then Tierney, but a 20-yard drive is blocked and loops behind.

40′ Liverpool win a series of corners on the left for Robertson to take, with Arsenal scrambling to clear on each occasion. The left-back eventually gets an angle to cross from open play and Mane gets a flick which just takes the ball away from Van Dijk! Close.

39′ Until now! David Luiz gives the ball away, Liverpool look left again and Robertson’s latest cross – this one a rather tame effort – is cut out at the front post by Bellerin.

38′ Arsenal have been so calm moving the ball out from defence, successfully beating the Liverpool press and getting their creative players involved.

36′ Wild! Liverpool stay patient on the edge of the area, but then Gomez joins the attack, shifts left to get away from Aubameyang and rifles high into the stands.

35′ Holding is not happy as Mane appears to run the ball out of play on the left but is allowed to continue. David Luiz deals with the winger’s cross, but Robertson is then able to deliver another wicked ball, just evading Salah.

32′ Arsenal overplay it in the box! This should be a big chance! Tierney cuts a gorgeous pass back to Maitland-Niles in the box, but he decides not to shoot and instead squares to Nketiah, who cannot in turn find Saka on the right side. Frustration for the Gunners.

30′ Arsenal survive! Mane takes a tumble in the area as he runs across Bellerin, but the ball breaks for Robertson to cross. Martinez dives towards the ball as it flashes across the face of goal, with no red Liverpool shirt able to get a touch.

29′ Milner twice delivers teasing crosses, either side of a hopeful Gomez punt, but first Tierney intervenes and then Xhaka. The midfielder is finding space down the left flank for Liverpool.

27′ OVER! Another Arsenal chance, another created by Saka! He slides a pass left to Nketiah, but the forward lacks Aubameyang’s composure and lifts a shot over the crossbar.

25′ A poor pass from Wijnaldum allows Bellerin to attack and seek out Nketiah in the area, but Gomez does really well to read the ball, get across and win a foul.

23′ Liverpool are just looking to take control again, with Milner driving them forward. Arsenal hold firm for now, though, and still lead.

22′ Williams allowed Aubameyang to shoot too easily for the goal and now bids to make amends. He cuts inside but sees a low shot blocked, before Milner keeps the attack alive. It is Milner who then arrives in the area to help the ball on, but Holding clears well.

21′ Arsenal are enjoying themselves now, with Aubameyang trying a trick or two on the left flank. Tierney eventually crosses, but Alisson intervenes.

18′ Saka takes the corner following Alisson’s save but picks out the gloves of the goalkeeper.

18′ SAVE! Alisson keeps Liverpool in it! Brilliant work from Arsenal and Saka once more. He cuts back a low cross into the path of Nketiah, who hits the target but finds the diving goalkeeper in his path.

15′ That goal came a little against the run of play, but Arsenal have settled into this contest now. The champions have work to do.

13′ Saka supplies his 13th assist since the start of last season. Only Lacazette (15) has contributed more for Arsenal across all competitions in this period.

12′ Aubameyang celebrates with a Black Panther ‘Wakanda Forever’ salute in an apparent tribute to the late Chadwick Boseman.

Arsenal

12′ Saka gets the assist with a stunning switch to Aubameyang, who still has plenty to do but does it brilliantly.

Arsenal

12′ GOOAAALLLL!!! AUBAMEYANG! It’s a beauty! 1-0 Arsenal! Moments after Milner heads over, Aubameyang cuts in from the left at the other end and arrows a finish into the bottom-right corner. Superb.

12′ CHANCE! Williams delivers from the right and Milner should do better! He runs onto the cross and makes firm contact with a header but misses the target.

10′ Aubameyang has netted a brace in each of his past two appearances at Wembley for Arsenal (versus Man City and Chelsea last season). Only Alexis Sanchez (five) has scored more goals for the Gunners at this stadium than their captain (four – level with Aaron Ramsey).

9′ Arsenal have a couple of opportunities to play in Aubameyang or Nketiah, but Van Dijk deals with the first opening and then Maitland-Niles underhits his pass for the second.

7′ OFFSIDE! Van Dijk prods into the net… but the goal will not stand! Robertson curls in a free-kick, yet Van Dijk is stood offside from the outset and it is a simple decision for the linesman.

6′ Foolish foul from David Luiz. He barges into Wijnaldum and gives Liverpool the opportunity to put a ball into the box from 30 yards out.

5′ A nervy moment for Tierney! Robertson beats Bellerin on the left and sends in a searching cross, with Salah waiting behind Tierney. The left-back cushions a volley back to Martinez but almost lobs his goalkeeper.

3′ Van Dijk’s long pass plays Mane in behind, but he is held up by Holding and then Robertson’s cross is easily cleared by David Luiz.

2′ Liverpool are quickly in control, with Arsenal sitting deep and working to close spaces in the final third.

1′ An early ricochet allows Mane to run at Bellerin on the left side of the Arsenal box, but the defender does well to win the ball and then a foul.

1′ KICK-OFF: Stand-in Liverpool skipper Milner gets us under way!

Excluding league games, Arsenal have lost just one of their past 12 matches at Wembley, while Liverpool have won only one of their most recent seven games at the national stadium.

Liverpool have Van Dijk fit again following a knock in pre-season, but neither Trent Alexander-Arnold nor captain Jordan Henderson are able to return. Tsimikas makes the bench.

Nicolas Pepe and Alexandre Lacazette are both absent for Arsenal, who include Martinez, Holding and Maitland-Niles despite reported interest from Aston Villa, Newcastle United and Wolves. Elneny, who spent last season on loan at Besiktas, also starts. Saliba is on the bench.
